How To Dance? How To Dance Salsa New York Style

Did you know that there are many different styles of salsa? While the LA style salsa might still be the most universally accepted and danced salsa style, the New York Style Salsa has slowly gained more and more popularity around the world. And contrary what some may say, it is easy for you to learn to how to dance this style. The main characteristic of the New York Style salsa that separates it from all of the other salsa dance styles is that the leader breaks forward with his left foot on the count six while the follower breaks back.? This is similar to the Puerto Rican style of salsa in that it emphasizes the second and the sixth beat of the music. ?

Many believe that the New York style of Salsa is actually harder to learn than many other styles of salsa like the LA style or the Miami Style, which emphasize the first and fifth beat of the music.

I think what we often fail to recognize, however, is that in New York probably over 90% of the salsa dancers dance strictly On2, emphasizing the second and sixth beat of the music, and learn this style of salsa. Does this mean that the people in New York are somehow more gifted or dedicated dancers than in the rest of the world? No, I don't necessarily think so.

While, I do agree that it might be slightly harder to learn to emphasize the second beat of the music in the beginning, in the larger scheme of things, this should not make a big difference. I think with proper teaching and enough practice salsa dancing can be very easy to learn no matter what style you decide to first learn.

My point is that if you have heard that it is hard to learn how to dance New York Style salsa it is not true. With good instruction, anyone can learn it.
